GOP insincerity shows when it comes to the environment

Republicans have rejected every single jobs measure since President Obama has been in office. They won the 2010 elections by saying they would cut spending, but they failed to mention a single specific program. Now, they are claiming that those programs, which win majority approval in every poll, are “job killers.” The GOP agenda favors Wall Street to the detriment of the nation’s needs. The Republican Party jobs program would work if we were willing to sacrifice our environment and our health, but most of us are not so willing; private sector jobs are important, but our democratic rights are more important.

Republicans, claiming concern for job loss, oppose regulations that are good for the country. Three of the Republican presidential candidates would severely weaken the EPA; each of the others would destroy it. Mitt Romney believes that the EPA should not regulate carbon emissions since he does not think “carbon is a pollutant in the sense of harming our bodies.”

Rick Perry, who has taken $11 million from the oil and gas industries since 1998, would put polluters in charge of the EPA: “I’ll tell you one thing: The EPA officials we have an opportunity to put in place, they’re going to be pro-business, and there’s not going to be any apologies to anybody about it. Those agencies won’t know what hit ‘em.”

John Huntsman, a heavy investor in his family’s Huntsman Corporation, said that the EPA is guilty of “gross regulatory overreach,” and promised to “dramatically rein in the EPA” if elected.

“Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid .” - Dwight D. Eisenhower

GOP bill would expose Grand Canyon to uranium mining

On Oct. 19, Republican lawmakers, led by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., proposed passing a bill that would expose one million acres of Grand Canyon National Park to uranium mining, reported Summit County Citizen’s Voice.

In an ongoing barrage against the Obama administration’s public land policies, and a continuous blatant disregard for the environment on the part of the GOP, the bill would overturn an existing moratorium on new mining in this area. It would also block a proposal by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to extend protection of the area for another 20 years, according to a press release by the Environmental News Network. The ban is expected to be decided on in December.

Salazar’s call for extension of making this land mine-free has been widely supported by scientists, businesses, and hunting and fishing organizations. Their discontent with uranium mining is not unreasonable.

In addition to spreading pollution, uranium mining is also largely seen as a jobs killer.

Paul Hedger, president of the Arizona Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns said, “Thousands of American jobs depend on tourism to the Grand Canyon. Why would we risk those jobs?”

The Grand Canyon produces over $700 million per year in economic activity, reported the Grand Canyon Trust. It currently provides some 8,000 direct jobs.

College costs, public and private, continue to rise

If you’re looking for a college education, plan to be in debt for a long, long time. The cost of schools is on the rise - again.

According to a study by Campus Grotto, an online magazine for college students, the price of tuition and fees has gone up wildly in the past few years alone. The magazine put together a list of the most expensive colleges in America, and reflected on the differences found when comparing the first such list, compiled only five years ago.

“While the names on the list haven’t changed much over the years, the numbers sure have,” says the magazine in introducing its report. “When we first started ranking colleges by cost back in 2007, only one school (GWU) had a total cost of over [$50 thousand], now 111 do. Back then not a single school had tuition over [$40 thousand] now 80 have passed that mark.”

Campus Grotto keeps a list for the cost of tuition, one for tuition and fees and another for all that plus the cost of housing.
